HTF - "Hard to Find" Translates loosely as "I've only got about 100 of these decks, but only list one at a time--every seven days."

RARE - If you do a search over on Amazon, you'll only find about thirty of them under "also available used from these sellers."

OOP - It was Out Of Print at one time, maybe for a couple weeks in 1998 in between printings.

EXTREMELY RARE - If you do a search over on Amazon, you'll only find about ten of them under "also available used from these sellers."

Have I missed any important ones?

OOAK - Only one of this kind, the others have spots or are different in some way....the light is shining on them differently or something.

Original - The idea to copy someone else's idea was entirely mine.

Not Tarot : This is one of those oracle decks, but I want my auction to be listed among the more collectable tarot decks, otherwise I'll never sell it.

Vintage also means:  smell like cheap incense, may have sticky fingerprints.

These look like they are very old (because I peeled the Il Menegello label off the box...) I saw an Il M. Soprafino sell for two THOUSAND US dollars on e-bay because of that.

Oh Yes! Vintage! How could I forget vintage? Well, I have used the word myself when selling a deck or two. We need to come up with some standards, I think.

"Not Tarot" Now that is clever though. The first person who thought of this really does deserve some credit. There is something almost Zen about it. "Yes, Grasshopper, it is Not Tarot and not Not-Tarot." To come up with such a simple idea to show up in a search for "tarot" when the item you're selling is NOT a tarot deck. I mean REALLY! Everything in the world qualifies; books, boats, real estate, credit default swaps, everything except an actual Tarot deck. There's something ingenious about it.

VINTAGE / ANCIENT : suckers pay more for the old stuff

owned by elderly aunt:  suckers pay more for the old stuff

Haunted:  suckers pay more for scary stuff

See a correlation between fancy descriptions and their meanings?

Oh yes! There's a deck right now I just came across "Spooky*Accurate*Psychic" at 140273678822. What could be better than that?

Other than a "Rare*Vintage*HTF*Spooky*Accurate*Psychic OOP Tarot deck, of course.

Of course I had to look it up, even though I have no money except for either food or cigarettes (competing addictions) .... but what I found was really and truly scary and spooky and psychic and cosmic.  The Ad said "PayPal Preferred".  On the graves of my ancestors, I swear that the seller read my mind..... 'cos ... gasp .... I, too .... chills down my spine.... prefer PayPal.  Wow! ... I feel like what a friend of mine calls a 'mozkick pisschick" (def: cosmic psychic).  I can feel my crown chakra (or the top of my head) lifting off into the ether as I tyyyyypppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.:c

Mythos! You would put food or cigarettes before buying a Tarot deck? The next thing you know, you'll be talking about preferring sex to a new Tarot deck! You're just some kind of sick person.

Adam, shouldn't we be excommunicating people like this or something?

I just really like the definition of "woowoo" person.  I feel like a little kid running around the house going "woowoo woowoo" like a train!

unique - only a dozen on Ebay right now
rare - I have only a couple dozen
vintage - made last year
extremely rare - I have only 6
hard to find - especially if you don't look
out of print - the fact that gazillions were printed is irrelevant

Poor Mythos never gets no sex.
She's busy painting Tarot decks.
As an artist, she's a jewel.
When it comes to cards,
she's The Fool.

Please accept in the ribbing, good nature it which it was intended!

Now, THAT'S scary!

What is that deck, though? I don't recognize it. Is it even a "real" Tarot deck or one of those "not-tarot" tarot decks?

It's an oracle deck called The Philosopher's Stone. You can find it over at TG.

Ribbing?  What ribbing?  You are talking to a woman who inadvertently glued her painting stool to a towel folded on the stool for added height - to her coat-length cardigan - to her dress - to her long pants under the dress - to her underpants - to her bum, last Monday.  Fortunately the glue was still gooey and I was able to part all the bits, strip off and wash the water-soluble glue from my clothes (oh and me ... and the towel and stool.  I am the Fool.

The really amusing part is that I was 'stuck' with the painting I was working on and had sat with brush in hand for 40 minutes or so before breakthrough ... and then came the realisation that I really was a tad stuck.  Life and art ... er ... very nearly bonded.:cl

That is a really funny scene, Mythos. Just glued to your work, eh? Do you folks get the old "I Love Lucy" TV reruns over there? Maybe you could earn extra money to pay for your Tarot habit by writing comedy sketches!

Everytime I picture you trying to stand up from your stool, it cracks me up. Since I don't know what you look like, I keep picturing Lucille Ball with that look on her face as she realizes what she's done.

Were you painting a Tarot scene at the time? Which one? I'm thinking it must have been XII, the Hanging Man.

Sorry, Nicole, about getting sniped, but honestly, is there any other way to actually win a Tarot deck. I remember the first time I got sniped I was sure there was evil software at work. How could they have read my mind at the last minute? I was ready to file a report with ebay demanding justice, when I worked it out in my head what must've happened and it all made sense. Ever since when I see a deck I REALLY want I prepare to plunge in in the last 20 seconds. But thankfully, I have not been so involved in the last 48 hours so I could not be the object of your venom. I did have one last week that I took my best guess and fired in the last 10 seconds and won by 10 cents. That had to hurt whoever was on the other end, but it was the number I saw in my mind. Oooooooh, Spooky! Haunted! Accurate!

Sorry, if I cross you, but these are Tarot decks we're talking about, not some frivolous luxury!

Hey all is fair in love and tarot :) ... I was aggrevated because I had to leave before the end of the auction and since there were no watchers and I was winning for the whole week I doubled my bid before I left the house thinking that would clinch it... and lost by 77 cents. I am not generally that much a spoil sport but I was fond of the deck and it is hard to find...

Anyone have a second copy of The Children Tarot deck for sale? <grin>

Ah yes, Nicole, I know well the emotions you go through at a time like that. I remember that first time I got sniped (probably from somebody on this forum!). It was mine, all mine, it was almost in my hand, I could see it, yes, yes, come to me, almost taste it, and.... And then suddenly, it was gone! Just like that! Gone! But it was mine, I tell you, MINE! All mine! Oh, my precious! Mine, all mine. We wants it! We must have it!

Hey, but I am suddenly in need of new guidelines for ebay buying due to something that happened just yesterday for the first time.

New Topic:

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT NEED TO ASK SELLERS ON EBAY

You know how when you first start out at this, you don't know what to watch out for and what questions to ask the seller? You just see the picture and start bidding. Then over time you learn that if it's not still in the wrapper and doesn't actually say "complete deck" or "78 cards" then you need to ask, "Is it a complete deck?" Are there 78 cards?"

Well, I have a new one that I can't believe I'll have to be asking based on this deck that just got here yesterday.

"Did a cat use the deck for a litter box?"

I am not making this up! I got an old Morgan Aquarian with the plain blue backs yesterday and when I opened it I thought I smelled something peculiar and took a sniff. I can't believe somebody would send such a thing without mentioning it!

Does anybody know how to remove cat odor from cardboard without damaging it? And I mean very strong cat odor, not just a little hint of feline aroma!

Blast! :ee

:cs

I seem to remember there is a type of cat litter that is supposed to absorb odours.

Perhaps you could try this homeopathic method, and place the cards in a tray of this (unused) cat litter.

If it's actual cat pee, hm. The only solution I've found for that is an enzyme solution, which is liquid...not so good for cards.  Here they sell it under the name "Anti-Icky-Poo" (no kidding!).

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=anti+icky-poo&aq=2&oq=anti+icky

Questions to ask e-bay sellers:

When you say 78 cards---are all 56 minors and 22 majors included, or are you counting title cards too?

Sheesh, that is a new one.  Sounds like a good excuse to get ones money back.   But if you really want the deck, the new biologics they make to remove the urine smell from rugs, etc work pretty well.  I'd try one in a small area first.  Just go into a good pet supply store and get ask for assistance.  They'll steer you toward what is best.  it might be possible to get one at your local grocery store or Wal mart, but I don't recommend them.  The last one I 'saved money' on bleached my carpet.  I usually go to PetsMart, but I am sure the other stores carry them too.

I just saw the last post.  the ones I've used are liquid spray that you can spray on very lightly.  then leave in an enclosed area and let work.  But try on alittle area first.  It might be worth trying different ways of spraying.

You could try a LOT of baking soda. Separate out all the cards and put each one in a box or plastic bag (not for too long in case of condensation)  "immersed" in some. Luckily it is very cheap !

E-bay item 360099346110  has this description:

"They are in decent condition for their age and amount of use."

In reference to a set of Lenormand cards that apparently were kept not ON the mantel of the fireplace, but...well, see for yourselves.

I'm not sure what there called but aren't there "rock" things used for that purpose? Those packs with rocks that absorb smell? You can try keeping a couple of cards in a box that also has a pack of those rock things and see if they work.

Having had a cat who was slightly un-clear about the idea of a litter box; the rocks won't work.  The baking soda won't work.  Yelling at the cat don't work.  Even crying don't work.

Try the spray stuff and pray.:kt

Of course you can always put them inside a dark, dry place (like - oh just to give a random example - in a pyramid) and wait a thousand years. The smell will probably have weathered off by then.

I wouldn't bet on it.  that particular smell is rough to eradicate.  I'm betting a thousand years wouldn't work.  the pyramid might, if all the legends are true.

On the topic of questions to ask sellers, I've learnt not to put words in their mouth.

If they state that it's complete, then I ask them, "How many cards are in the deck?" . . . you know, because of those decks with extra cards!

Very good point, after all a complete deck of cards is 56, isn't it?  so this deck has all kinds of extra cards!

Or.."I don't really know anything about these.."  as an excuse for incomplete deck.

This does not always work. A friend (you know who you are, but I will not name you !) just won a deck on e-bay - a GOOD one :ok - she had asked how many cards and the seller - who knew nothing about tarot, but had at least listed it, I think, as incomplete - said 76. But the price was fantastic for the deck - even an incomplete one (I said I would buy it off her if she hated it.)

It was complete. The seller clearly could not count. That was a real bargain !

E-bay item 360099346110  has this description:

In reference to a set of Lenormand cards that apparently were kept not ON the mantel of the fireplace, but...well, see for yourselves.

Perhaps the owner was trying to rid the deck of cat pee smell.

I really hate the sellers who can't be honest.

If you really want to keep the cards, maybe putting them in a box with Lavender might work.  I would try putting pure Lavender on cotton swabs and putting the cards in a closed container with that.

If you are daring, you might try wiping the cards gently with the Lavender.

Good Luck!

Blessings,
Terri

"Etruscan Tarot Cards Deck, 3000 yr. old Italy, OOP."

:cl

Not intentionally deceptive, but sure made me look twice.

There is yet another deck on Ebay that is being sold as RARE and HARD TO FIND: the Mystic Tarot from Taiwan:

Of course this is just the Royal Tarot that you can buy for a few dollars/pounds and that has been sold under the name Wizard Tarot too. I really hope nobody falls for such nonsense. They want 75 dollars for the damn deck too! Grrrrr. This just annoys me to no end!

Ok, end of rant :hp *steps off soapbox now*

Those "tongs" are what Old Witches use to hold the marijuana ciggy when it gets too small and threatens to burn their witchy fingers.

So I hear.
