Recently won a copy of A Complete Tarot Guidebook, yet another Japanese book and majors set. In this case, the 22 colorful cards appear to be created initially by photo-compositing, then processed with one or more Photoshop-type filters to give a variety of effects, from vaguely impressionistic or pointillist, to the appearance of looking though wavy frosted glass. This is a technique of which I'm usually not too enamoured, but in this case, some of the cards are quite evocative.

An interesting discovery was that the artist, who goes by the name Nekomata, has a web site whose address is buried at the back of the book. Checking it out, I discovered that he or she has actually created two complete 78 cards decks using this technique, one with completely illustrated minors (type "A"), and the other with unillustrated pips (type "B"). Here are links to them (you can click the thumbnails for larger versions):

Deck type "A"

Deck type "B"

Curiously, the cards in the A Complete Tarot Guidebook set are a mix of the majors from the two decks, with most from Deck B, except for The Lovers, Chariot, and Temperance which are from A.

As far as I can tell, the complete decks exist in "virtual" form only. While not all the cards are equally successful, I'd be quite happy to have a physical copy of the complete type A deck.

I love that set - I got it last year. I never understood it well enough to figure that all out though. Thanks.

The deck published in 2004 is a majors only deck, which seems to follow Deck B except in the case of the Lovers, The Chariot and Temperance.
