Are you collecting tarot decks for the joy of collecting, or do you use tarot for readings or meditation? Any other uses?

I would have to say that I use whichever deck beckons. If the deck is sealed, it will have to be opened. :)

Yes. (though I don't use them for meditation.)

I don't collect decks. I just buy them as I am a tarot fun, want to explore new decks, I love art, occasionally read with them. But then they get piled up and become a collection :) (but I don't buy them for collecting purpose).

I plead guilty to being an inveterate collector. I did once try a tarot reading back in the late 1970's but I just found it amusing and rather absurd. I am only interested in the artwork of tarot. That is enough for me. I know most tarot enthusiasts find that absurd and ridiculous, but that is the way I have turned out, and it seems unlikely at my age I will reverse direction.

I wouldn't call being interested "only" in collecting a guilt, after all this is the tarot collectors forum. I asked the question out of curiosity. Last edited on Fri Apr 29th, 2016 05:55 pm by burroughs

I use tarot daily for personal readings. Always advises me on something that WILL occur that day. Capitalized because the card(s) inevitably accurately describes the scenario. When the situation plays out, I know in advance how to address it or what to expect.

I always wonder what the cards would say to the unfortunate persons who would face a very difficult event today (or tomorrow), tragedy, and the like.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. Almost all my decks are Marseille style decks or decks pre-dating RWS. I read with about half of them. The rest I reserve for comparison and study of their history and iconography. It's never occurred to me to use them for meditation.

I read with 2 decks professionally, a few other decks I use to read for myself & collect, hoard & covet the rest, mainly for the art I suppose!

I don't read cards.
I look at cards as art objects.
I am a collector.
I pick and choose decks from artists that have something interesting to say.
I am not a "completist", so my goal is not to have a large quantity, or one of every deck.
I also "use" some them for research, particularly the old historical ones, for my own work.
eta:
I hadn't been collecting for a while, but recently added some new & old things.

I also collect for the joy of collecting. I love the art, all the different interpretations. So yeah, I am also a collector.
Next to that, I do occasionally do readings. But I only use a very select number of decks out of my large collection to read with. Mainly the Rider Waite, but occasionally I will also use the Diary of a Broken Soul or another favorite.

I do both. Collect many for their art, collect many for "completionism" and also collect some I read with. I enjoy them all, except the Doreen Virtue ones. I felt I owed it to myself to see what they were like, as I don't like discussing decks I have never seen. And I don't dispose - I might day read with one to see if I can !

Yes!
I collect. I cannot resist the art. Cannot. Resistance is futile.
I read with them sometimes.
I use them for contemplation more so than meditation.
I use them in my creative life. They inspire my music and artwork and fiction.
They tell me things about my characters. They help generate ideas.
The cards are great tools for writers, artists, musicians.

Mostly for collecting. I occasionally read, but not very often and more for "this vs that", meditation or creative purposes, rather than divination.
I love seeing the same things interpreted differently by different people: fairytales, plays, fonts, historical events and of course, playing cards and tarot! Each deck is a different way of looking at things, almost a puzzle to solve and I find myself endlessly intrigued and inspired by them.
I have to admit, I also love the idea of having a "collection" that will outlast me - a little slice of history.

I collect but am getting pickier as I go along... I probably had about 400-500 decks over the years but am now down to under 350... Another purge is due at some point - I am shooting for the 100 deck level... that said it may be years to get there ...
I do use cards to read :)

Once upon a time, I thought I would only own one deck, so I purchased the prettiest one I could find and that really resonated with me.
Since then, for the most part, my collection has grown under a similar criteria. I rarely read with my cards, but I want decks that I feel like I *could* read with. If I don't find the images inspiring, I'll pass it by.
For a period of time I felt like I wanted a "representative" deck for different things - Asian, Egyptian, etc. Then, I purchased The Ancient Egyptian Tarot by Clive Barrett and I realized I didn't like it. I passed it on to my husband, and now only purchase decks that "speak" to me.
The only exception I've made to this rule is purchasing dragon themed decks. Although I don't really like all of them, I do like dragons.

Both, some are for reading, some are for study, some are for collecting to peruse at my leisure.

I collect them, but also read with them. I only have one deck (a very nice 1980's Thoth) that is unopened and unread with. And I have a LOT of other Thoth decks that I use.

I collect, but have culled my collection in the past year to get rid of the "what was I thinking?" decks that I bought in fits of "irrational exuberance" (to quote Alan Greenspan). I do a daily 3 card draw with my main deck, the Alchemical, and compare the cards I draw to cards from three other decks in my collection. So, I do both... I collect and I use my decks. However, I read for myself only, never for or about others.

I've always been a collector, attracted basically by the beauty for the decks and sometimes by the stories behind them. I have no confidence at all in my ability to "read" for others and doubts about the claimed ability of others. Still, I have one particular deck whose values and insights fit mine so closely that I use it to "read" for myself. Not to find out if my estranged girlfriend is coming back or if I'll get that perfect job. I read to allow the deck to offer to me messages from my wiser self that remind me of the path I'm wandering about on and the dangers and struggles I should anticipate there. I do both....I try to stop collecting and focus on my reading decks...and then a deck that has beautiful artwork catches my eye and Im done for....I guess the artist in me will always lean towards the collecting

I started out with the intention of learning to "read" the cards, but sadly discovered that I didn't seem to have much of a "knack" for doing readings. Still, as so many here have said, I could not resist the artwork, so have evolved into a collector despite not having that intention when I started out. I occasionally use certain cards for spellwork, and on the rare occasions I still attempt a reading, I use the Hudes deck.

I used to buy the decks with irresistible (to me) artwork, but always said I'd stop at 100 decks. It's like having so many miniature art galleries. I ended up with about 130 decks, mostly added to these days by the decks I create rather than bought ones. I decided to slow down when I found I was putting new decks on the tarot shelves unopened. I do read for myself with a few favorites - but not all that often.
Still fascinated by tarot history though, read through threads on the Tarot History Forum from time to time and look forward to Mary Greer's history and reading posts. Last edited on Tue Mar 27th, 2018 05:01 pm by goldenweb
