it's the first Vampire deck I ever purchased; this is a really fun deck, the artistry is beautiful, the theme is eloquently expressed and it's very sexy. Victoria Frances is a wonderful artist. The pips aren't dynamically illustrative, but I'm glad she didn't feel the need to fall back on a RWS subtext to in order to satisfy the expecations of the Tarot establishment. The black roses, butterflies, masks and crosses are a heartfelt expression of her vision and appropriate to the spirit of the nocturnal world she has created. These symbols are honest and spontaneous. I could easily read with these cards like a dark mirror of a Marseille deck, which is not so innocent to begin with. :P:P:P:P:P LOL and the next vampire deck I'll buy is by Robert Place edited: oh that's right......I forgot about the Bohemian Gothic actually that's the second deck, but technically the Favole is still the first....Bohemian Gothic is second and I'm still waiting for that to arrive....although strictly speaking it's not a purely vampire themed deck per se Last edited on Thu Dec 27th, 2007 06:06 am by Papageno357 |

I'm curious if this was actually conceived as a tarot, or if it's one of those deals where an artist (or someone) selects from an existing body of work and attempts as best they can to match illustrations originally created for other purposes to tarot cards. I do recognize that Victoria Frances is a very skillful practitioner of this sort of fantasy art, but as tarot, many of the cards I've seen seem to be a bit (sometimes quite a bit) of a stretch. I'm definitely looking forward to the Place deck. |

I admit it's the latter, but in this case it just happens to work (speaking strictly for myself) whether I look at this as a Tarot or Oracle deck. there was some discussion about how the Magician and High Priestess cards should have been swapped etc. etc. and the suits don't adhere to tradition either, but somehow the spontaneous and off-centered quality of this deck just works for me. it's not a defensible argument but the bottom line is, I think it's fun and I'm drawn to it instinctively. maybe I'm just in a good mood. I'll take the Favole over any number of others where the art is forced into conformity and what we're offered is a mediocre (at best) Tarot deck with no depth and boring superficial cliches. |

I guess I'm the lone wolf here, I find vampire decks to be tacky and gimmicky so wouldn't buy them. Nice artwork on some of these Favole cards but I consider the whole genre to be silliness personified. [Ducks damaged fruit. . . .and exits, saying "Bite me!"] |

point taken and as I've said before, this is a first for me........maybe I just feel the need to have something really fun and frivolous to play with and get away from the seriousness of it all for a change ;) it can't be Ingmar Bergman or Greenaway all the time..........sometimes I like some Tod Browning and horror flicks too ![]() |

It's a slippery slope. |

Until it's too late... he-he-he (evil, manical laughter) I was wrong, I feel the HUNGER for BLOOD as I turn into a vampire! Or does that only happen once I get the deck? Hi, I'm new here. Does anybody know which suits in this deck correspond to the traditional Tarot suits? According to someone on amazon, Crosses=Wands Masks=Pentacles Flowers and Roses=Cups Butterflies=Swords. but elsewhere on the net, someone said "Looking at them I figured that the crosses must be swords, the masks wands, the flowers represent cups and the butterflies pentacles." The first interpretation sounds like it may be right to me, because I would guess that butterflies would represent the element of air like the swords, flowers could be symbolic of emotions like the cups are, masks could be like pentacles in that they could represent the material world, but I'm not sure about the crosses. I can also draw similarities between other suits, so the more i think about it, the more confused I become. Perhaps they are not even meant to correspond to the traditional suits, but if this were the case, one would think there would be a book available to explain it. I haven't received my deck yet, so I haven't been able to study them, but I was interested to know what your views are. Thanks. Last edited on Wed Apr 23rd, 2008 10:11 am by Megan_Jane |

http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=94285 This is a thread with one take. I have asked permission to quote from another where there is more discussion, but on a members only forum.... |

OK I have their permission. her eis the full discussion; I will add to it as others do so.... 1: I initially thought I would use butterfly for the swords. My reasons were simple. I love butterflies. And the swords are my favorite suit. To me swords are air, butterflies fly in the air. To me the swords/air suit also represents transformation, but after thinking a bit more I said well duhhhh so do the other suits. So, I set the butterflies aside. Move on the the black rose suit. My first thought with these was the suit of cups. For obvious reasons actually, emotions. But then, quickly following that thought was that the cups are also a very spiritual suit, so maybe the cross would be better suited. The black rose could represent the pentacle/disk suit because well because they grow in the earth. Or die when disconnected from it. So, maybe I will keep the crosses as the cups and the black roses as the pentacles. Moving on to fire………what???? Masks as fire? Hmmmmm, well maybe Masks can be the air. How can masks be air, well they cover our face….and our face is our head and inside our head is our brain where our thought processes take place. That was my thought process. Perhaps they can hide our thoughts. Not sure if I really like this but it makes a little more sense than the masks representing fire. But that means that Butterflies would then be fire. That would burn their pretty little wings. Fire transforms though. It cleanses and brings change. So, while I am not crazy about the idea, the Butterflies could do all right here. Those were the thought processes behind my decisions, does anyone have any better ideas or do these seem to make sense? Crosses/cups. Black rose/pentacles. Butterflies/fire/wands Masks/air/swords. Then someone posted the link to the thread I already posted. 1 again: Thanks for that ****, so according to Umbrae who said according to something else: Me: I have been having this issue for ages. The only good thing for ME is that as I read by images, it doesn't make that much difference... but still, it really is confusing. I do wish that when people create a deck like this, they would include that kind of info..... 2: I think if it was me I would have the have the butterflies as Swords Air - my thinking butterflies can symbolise transformation and our thinking can do that for us. 1. ****, I at first liked the butterflies for air, and thought of the transformation element too, but how would you explain putting the masks as fire then? I mean there has to be some sort of logic to it, or at least an "idea" of how the other would fit. 3: Hmmmm Fire seems Gothic correct. Masks as Earth Coins seems fair. The Butterflies/Mariposas are on snowy landscape- that says to me Air North Swords The Roses/Flores water East Cups (the shape is cuplike for starters even if it has thorns that draw blood) The Black Rose by Jamie Mallinson She sits at her mirror, brushing her hair, dressed in black velvet, with just the right flair. She puts on her make up with ever an ease, ready for the night, ready to please. She picks up her flower and closes the door, its sunset this evening, who could ask for more? She walks through the tall grass with a graceful pose, she bends down to lay her perfect black rose. (ON a grave) Actually Tarot Garden says the images were from a stock of illustrations not particular to Tarot. Maybe that’s the problem- like it better than the BG. 1: OK, I think I have decided what I am going to use: |

I read the Favole as : Butterflies- swords. My gut reaction is that butterflies inhabit the realm of air, so that would be swords for me. The Black rose- cups as emotions and roses work together. Crosses -wands -traditionally crosses are made from wood so that one wasn't too big a leap for me. Masks-pentacles ...this was more of a default than a perfect fit, but I can live with masks as being tangible items people can wear and I think of pentacles as relating to the physical. .. arghhhhhh it is still a stretch ... Thanks. There are so many different ways of interpreting it, so I think seeing as it doesn't give an explanation, that it is up to each individual reader to decide for themselves. I have come to the conclusion that the only reason the four suits were chosen is that those four things showed up a lot in her art, so they used them rather than have her to create new artwork featuring wands, cups, etc. I really like the image used for "The Fool"... the discarded masks seem to speak to me in relation to the meaning of that card, but some of the others don't match up so well. I wish there was a book to go with it, explaining the images, but as they were not created with the Tarot in mind, that's not gonna happen ![]() |
