|
I posted a request for the Waite Variation II "A la Prinke" in the trading and exchange, but a number of people have been interested and asked to see pictures. So here is information and pictures of all three the Waite Variations II. There is also a Waite Variation-I "Know thy Waite", which features details of the RWS. I hope I can show some pictures of that later.
Anyway, the info:
The Waite Variation II decks are three decks drawn by Witta Jensen en printed by Frank Jensen in a very limited edition. Basically, all three were majors only, very small decks. Witta had redrawn the images of the RWS, but each with their own twist:
#II-1 - "A la Prinke" : coloured according to the colour schemes from Rafal T. Prinke as he used them in colouring the Alchemical Tarot (also printed by Frank Jensen in limited edition)
#II-2 - "Metallic Blue on Red" : basic outlines, not coloured in with metallic blue on red paper (very charming btw)
#II-3 - "My favorite" : drawn with more detail and coloured with really soft colours.

Btw, the colours are so light that they don't even show on the scans. You can see a bit of pink on the Fool and the Hierophant.

Thank you truelighth. These are really fun, especially The Fool with his cool shades, dangley spider, and sad face sun!
The Prinke version is interesting too; all backwards except for the B+J on The High Priestess' pillars. I particularly like the colouring on these ones.

They are all great and fun deck - long on my wishlist (and above my budget for now, but one day...)
PS they are also very briefly documented in Frank K. Jensen's "The story of the Waite-Smith Tarot"p. 175

Or perhaps they are the only deck where the B+J are correctly put ....

| Well.. it is not so much the B and J, but more that the images I posted are mirror images (backwards from normal, Empress facing the other way and the others too). Since those were taken from the original auction, I presume that they are correct and the A la Prinke is indeed backwards (except for maybe that B + J).

| I see that you have three variations, and are looking for another. I've seen the Transwaite listed as a variation. Do you consider it a variation? What is the grand total of variations that Frank did? Thank you.

I didn't actually count the Transwaite as a variation, since it isn't called Variation officially. But I guess you can count it. I do have that one too, but it was produced so very differently. Using a Japanese technique of layers, so when you hold them up to the light, you see another (naughty) image.
So counting the Transwaite, there would be 5: Variation I, Varation II 1,2,3 and Transwaite.
Of course Frank also published the Pamela's Portraits in several formats: the 100 APA version (in red and black with names of tarot people), the version with red,blue and black as postcards (no names) and then a handcoloured one. I have the first two of those.

Yes, a revealing little deck! I only have the Transwaite and the first Pamela's Portraits, so I have to upgrade my 'Frank' section.

which claims that Transwaite is also a variation (III) and that 30 of it were made.
This info is missing at Tarotgarden, the other 4 variations aren't really mentioned anywhere aside from here in this forum, and on the link I have found.

Just wanted to show a bit of the texture of the Waite Variationer II-1, it's hard to see that on the scans above.

Thanks Lulukat, for that info. I never seen it before. Love it!
I did kinda understand the Transwaite to be a variation too, (official or not). But I am not sure if the number stated is correct. Frank told me that as long as they still had the boxes for it, the could make one when i asked about one. And they had one box left then (they are special boxes). So there may be 31 (or more?) of this one.
And thanks for posting the images. Those are better then the scans I had from the auctions!

truelighth, can you take a look at your cover card for your Transwaite?

Yes, the box is very special. It is the only box I've seen that was signed. It is signed 'Alfred P. 1990.
