Does anybody know why I've collected two copies of T: The New Tarot and both have 78 cards but they're not the RIGHT 78 cards. It seems a strange coincidence since I've only seen it with this particular title.

For example, I have one deck that had no 3 of serpents but two 9 of serpents and then I got another one with two 5 of serpents but no 6 of serpents. I'm starting to wonder if maybe the manufacturer back in 1969-1970 had loose quality control, perhaps involving, ahem, substances? Maybe they all got together to pack decks at the end of the day and have a few tokes?

It's just strange that I've had 2 of these decks that came in like this and I haven't had this experience with any other deck. (Though I do think I picked up an old Aquarian that had an extra Queen of Cups or Wands, but one of them was severely creased and I thought maybe the previous owner went out and got a replacement.)

I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me in the direction of any information in that regard.

I don't know much more information. But I do know that I have had 3 copies of the T:New Tarot for the Aquarian Age in my hands. And indeed, two of them had one pip card missing and another double. Those two have now found another home. I only had one deck that was really complete with the right cards. Strange indeed.

Very interesting! Thanks for the reply. I was starting to wonder. And I wonder if there are more decks like that out there that people do not realize they have. Isn't it odd.

Unless of course the two decks you once had are the same two I have that have just made the rounds on ebay!

:gi

I bought mine from two different sellers though, so I can't blame you.

Mine have gone to new owners a long time ago. And I forgot to mention I picked up a incomplete copy once for a few dollars to make the other two complete again. So when they left me, they were complete.

Thanks for the heart attack....:cl

Mine is fine, though I do have 2 Royal Maze cards. The deck I also have as part of the Word of One set is also fine.

Back in January you posted about missing and/or duplicate cards for T the New Tarot.

Its funny, but at one time I had two sets. One was missing a book, but otherwise they were both intact with no duplicate or missing cards.

I gave one away years ago... sigh.

Interesting deck though, especially how they derived the cards and imagery.

I haven't experienced this issue, but then there was more than one published edition of this set. I believe the earlier edition, circa 1969-1970, was in a navy blue box with gold lettering. The later edition - early  80s?- is in a white box, with multicolored lettering(I'm thinking mostly orange, going from memory).

Which edition did you notice the issues with?

I always, always -did I say always?- count and suit my decks upon receipt, regardless of whether they are new or used. A lesson learned long ago, the hard way!

Sorry, I didn't reply sooner. You caught me just before I left for a holiday trip. I have a couple copies of the white box version which I think are the 1970-1971 editions--both with a missing card AND a duplicate card (but different ones!). I also picked up a deck without a box that someone was selling VERY cheap thinking I could maybe pick up the missing cards, but then I found that the free-standing deck had a different cardback!

I wonder if it's the back that came with your 1969 blue box edition. The difference is that the loose deck has no stars in the blue field surrounding the double ouroboros on the back. Otherwise they look identical.

I'll include a scan. I'd be curious to know if the blue box 1st ed. has the card back without the stars.

Because why? Because collecting is an obsessive-compulsive kind of thing maybe?

Thanks.

Have stars. Have stripes on box. Deck not loose - Mine says "Fourth printing July 1970"... Bought in 1981.

For the record - I also have their prototype for the whole Communify project - now published in lurid technicolour as the Word of One, but not, I think, till after John Cooke died - it comprises a total of 64 uncut cards in black and white, showing three decks (majors and knights from T,  and majors only from the Gypsy Tarot - a bit TdM ish, and from one they called the Atlantean tarot)  with instructions for a game, cobbled together in this form for showing to would be publishers. (there's a letter from Alice Cooke about it all, too.)

It cost me a whole £5.....

5 whole pounds? Stole, you mean STOLE it for 5 pounds, don't you? Probably from some poor pensioner who only used it once in 1971 at a love-in. It's people like you Gregory, that ruin it for the rest of us...:f5 pounds! Ack!

Got any pics?

There is this nice man (whose name I shall not supply !) who runs a rather special sort of service; he buys up decks (tarot and playing cards) and sends a list out to his clients with set prices. You get to say which you want - at those prices - and on a fixed date, he sorts it all out and makes sure that everyone gets something where at all possible. He doesn't do computers - last time I got a few for a SILLY price - bought for other forumites here and elsewhere who I knew wanted them ! - I did suggest ebay but he said he "can't be bothered with all that stuff....") From him I got my Poggi Dante :ok

I hadn't got any for a while, as there had been no tarots - but out of the blue he wrote to me and said he had found this thing down the back of an old wardrobe while redecorating, and would I like it for a fiver. Well, YES :D.

Pix - OK - later.

OK - I cannot find out how to have more than one image to a post; here first a page of cards - he puts the three decks together, as you see:
