Once I told a friend who carried such sorrow in his soul that we are like poets speaking a dead language; trying in vain to sound coherent to people who could never understand.

Once I heard a friend speak of 5 roses; one of each of his loved ones gone from his life; and I thought I heard him call them "Prophets of the Rose" in a language that was not my own but that was in my mind; he never called them that; I heard it in my head.

Once I saw cruelty hidden in a smile; one of those lessons that echo forever in the soul; how beauty and ugliness are two faces to the same coin anyway its turned; but beauty is what I chose to see and I turned blind to ugliness.

Then one night she came to me, Justice.... The first of the Prophets to arrive at my banquet meant for the demented. It takes a bit of insanity to open up the flood-gates to our inner hell; and in another place wearing some other skin it's quite alright to let the beast run free.

I shall give ugliness a face and I shall clothe it in beauty, so that you will see what you want to see and turn blind to the ugliness I wish to show. The Prophets are coming... In my head, I can hear them whispering poetry in a language that makes no sense to the lucid mind.

Soon.

Ash

Nicole,

:bl You may want to know before going further that this deck will be quite uninhibited in many ways that the Diary is not. Its a deviation from propriety; through the eyes of dementia. :c

WOW. I love the strange creepy feel of this one. This is in no way ugly. Kinda reminds me of the lovecraft deck, though this one has less of the "organs" feel (as in body parts). The sepia tone works very very well with the images too. It adds to that haunting quality.

6HauntedDays, sometimes they're quite alright. Othertimes, I'm not quite sure. I feel relieved when they don't freak people out though.:gi

BlueToy, thank you. I'm glad you like the sepia tones. Its something I always wanted to try out. Sometimes I find that black and white can be a little harsh and sepia sort of softens the feel somewhat.

truelighth, :hp glad you found the Prophets. Care to join us for dinner? Stick with me, I'll make sure they don't mess around... too much.

Silence descended upon the hall as Conformity watched the stain of zealotry slowly eating away at the once pristine walls and the room turned cold with trepidation.

It was then that the first notes from the violin drifted across the room and all eyes turned to the next guest to arrive.

Ah, gorgeous!!! That Prophet of Art is so lovely. The Conformity (V) is also wonderful, but scary:ee. The XIV is gentle and flowing. I like it.

LOL! :gi

Well, it isn't so much her stare. It is more what she said that is the scary part. Harsh, but also so true. Very confronting.

(And yeah, I don't like confrontation too much... :cc)

But I most definately will join you for a drink (and follow the rest of the cards).

Wonderful to make your aquaintance in the Halls of Prophecy.

I am shadow; alter ego; id; demon maniac; all the wondeful things people refuse to give in to though they wish they could... unbriddled temptation :hp

I have a story to tell; for I have been away roaming the skies between the realm of imagination and reality and I came across the most delightful news. :m

Do not recoil, my friends, it is quite all right... we are here to meet the Prophets who speak what we do not wish to hear. Yet it is the reality we despise; not the people in them. So stay if you bear no harsh judment; we do not tolerate that within these walls. :x

There is a place in cyberspace where people come in flocks.

A daily pilgrimage of sorts to seek answers; a quest to be saved from themselves for they cannot do it with their own hands thus, they would go from one charlatan to the other and ask, "Please, please, O' One-Eyed Master with the forked tongue of a serpent! Help me see for I am blind though I have eyes."

So many pompous, ignorant charlatans lying in wait for such fools; ready to fill their heads with fine words riddled with nonsense.

And the flock will grovel; they will kiss the feet of the charlatans; they sing words of praises and when they leave, they take with them words of bigotry and judgment. But it is all good, for they have received verbal vomit in exchange for coins; and everyone feels fulfilled.

The flock have been given the fish for the day by the fools who would play the hierophant. A transaction akin to gratification of the loins between the whore and the gentleman rogue in the shadows of an abandoned alley. Two needy individuals feeding of each other's flesh.

And where have all the prophets gone?

The laughter of the Beetle King echos across the halls where the prophets gather for the feast; they are no longer needed in a place where the legions rein supreme. Leave the prophets in peace; they cannot save a people who refuse to save themselves.

And the Beetle King will dance to the song of the universe. For his place in it was assured the moment the fallen rose in rebellion. Everything is as it should be.

As the melody died away; as the golden notes of melancholia faded into the night, the prophets heard footsteps coming up behind them.

In came the regal Prophet of Fidelity, smiling as she entered the hall and announced:

"I have met the whore and the gentleman rogue you speak about. I have kissed them and whispered messages meant for their ears alone but they heeded me not.

They could not hear me though I was closer to them than their own heartbeat. Friends... a toast to the blind, the mute and the deaf.

Why we try time and again to touch their souls I do not know; they have become cold like the frigid winds of winter.", and they burst into laughter for none here can feel the bite of the wind.

A gathering of long lost friends, time cannot touch them here and none who are present are mortal; but the beast was here all along...

Guys!! :c Really, you have to stop encouraging me!! I am totally out of control!! :ww

PPPPPPsssssssssSSSSSSTttttttttttttttttttttt..ssttttt

Come by tonight when the moon is perched on the tip of the raven's wing; a party crasher will come entertain us with parlour tricks and silly pranks but I swear to you now, what makes him such a riot is his wicked, wicked sense of humour.

He leaves no footprints; no sign to mark his passing except the trail of a billion shards of broken glass spiked with poison to cut the brain. :ee

He is a Prophet of the Thorn, he is the Prophet of Intentions.... here's a confession if I may... I think I am in love with this one.. just a little bit.. :tt

****** OOOoooo.... heeeereeee he comes now!!***********

01

The Prophet of Intentions takes a bow before the audience; he claims to have wandered in because he got lost :xbut I know better.... beware the Magic man; he is both kind and cruel.

He is the liar who strays not from the truth; for the best amongst the liars are the ones who stay closest to the truth. He is skilled in blurring the thin line that distinguishes one from the other; like the art of blending black and white into a million different shades of gray.

Notorious party crasher; trouble maker; heart-breaker at your service.

Magic Man, Magic Man who are you?

Nice way to build up the suspension, Ash! First tell us about the party crasher with the wicked sense of humour on Friday and then on Saturday, there he is! I was waiting for your next post to see who you were talking about. But he snuck in on saturday without me even noticing!

And how great he looks. He most definately looks to me like a bit of a charmer, a trickster, a trouble maker, all in one. I love it!!! :ok

We can run on all fours and howl at the moon anytime; in the vast lands of cyberspace, it matters not that we live world apart. Amok is when we free the beast trapped in a human shell... I do like that idea a lot. :ce

truelighth

:gi It wasn't me, Intentions made me do it.. really!!

*************************************************************

06 Prophets of Infidelity

You do remember Fidelity, don't you? She was abandoned by faithless hedonistic whores; crack-babies of the new millenium seeking hedonistic pleasures with the maniacal glee of an energizer bunny.

Fidelity listens to Desire; Desire is the one who struggles in desperation to be freed from the shackles of honor and integrity; Desire is the one clamouring... clawing to feed the embers burning within.

Fidelity's own words are drowned by Desire's obsessive rants against unjustified deprivation.

From the shadows, comes another Prophet of the Thorn. Infidel; Fidelity's own shadow twin emerges from inky blackness to hold her in a warm embrace. Then he walks over to Desire; he takes off the heavy chains from around her neck and
I heard him whisper to Fidelity as he holds Desire hostage:

You know Fi, if you had taken your medication like you were supposed to, perhaps you wouldn't take things so personally. :m

Loyalty is subjective and if noone follows the principles you impose, take heart that they are loyal to the ones I offer in place of yours :ceand their loyalty to a cause you do not believe in does not mean loyalty is dead :x; merely a deviation from what you approve of.

There are no rules here and we are all trapped in the asylum up in somebody's head so its quite alright to let the poor girl run free. Why keep her chained up when you fight to be heard like the rest of us? :qq

Let her have a say for she has brought countless goodies to the masses. She's certainly more fun than having you or Conformity around :rr.

:gi Funny you should mention that. They're a very young couple I sit and talk to quite often; the girl is barely out of her teens and listening to them makes my jaw drop. The girl plots to suck the wealth off her parents before she leaves the nest while the boy wants to lobotamize her mother with a rusty chisel :ee. Added to the mix is the fact that they are together but are also seeing other people. :qqSome things I can't figure out but as long as they're happy with the arrangement; who am I to say anything.

:c Hhhhmmm.. and I think I am the one who's not right in the head.

I'm glad you do like The Prophets; its a concept I'm experimenting with. I wanted to change the titles to neutralize it and then create a masculine and feminine version for each card; not sure how that will turn out but it sure is a lot more work.

06 is the first set to be completed. The Lovers card with Fidelity and Infidelity to represent the Rose and the Thorn respectively.

09 Prophet of Inquiring Minds

See when there is a gathering of this sort, there is bound to be drama and I for one dislike drama with a passion. All the bickering and pettiness makes my head ache; I just can't stand it :f

I would cut off my ears and stab out my eyes :cc if I thought that would help.. it wouldn't. In fact, let's just dismiss that idea outright as stupid :xand try something else.

The Beetle King gave me a map and told me to follow it; it will take me to someone who hated all that noise as much as I. So I took the map; locked all the Prophets in that softly-padded room for the criminally insane and went looking for the elusive hermit.

In one of the rooms marked IX, I found him. A little younger than I had expected, a little unconventional to be called a recluse; "What kind of hermit are you?" I demanded.

He stuck a lamp in my face and said to come closer so I may see better and I did.

He looked like me a little, if I was a man and he had the Glass City in a jar; it looked to me like Eden was burning. The Prophet of Inquiring Minds laughed at me; he said it was I who wanted to burn the city to the ground. The lamp shed light into the depths of my heart and that was what I saw

What nonsense!!! :qqI turned around and ran for he was crazier than the rest of them but not before I spat a mouthful of expletives at him :ce

08 Prophet of Strength

Then came the Prophet of Strength from the Rose tribe.

I must tell you, in another place, she's really a very nice girl, really nice. There (I shall not name the place), she waded into a pool with a chain leashed around her neck and with the other end, she tried to bind a dragon because she thought she could subdue it. If I did not see it with my own eyes, I would never have believed it possible but the dragon gave in because he chose to stay with her; not because he was weak.

Here... she got a little diabolic (to put it mildly). **You have to be sensitive when talking to loonies coz we get worked up pretty easy. Useful tip to know :ro **

This particular episode was triggered by a title in a competition about the 7 deadly sins and the word Wrath jumped out right before Lust.

See, Strength got upset (VERY UPSET = WRATH) with the way the species known as Panthera Tigris have been hunted to near extinction.

Strength declared that if the sapiens sent down as viceroys over the land would love the Tigris to death, then it is only befitting that she love these sapiens exactly the same way. So she donned her velvet robe with roses embroideried upon her back; she became the beast.

O savage beast... see how rivers of blood quench the thirst but the beast will never be satisfied as long as hate feeds on hate (HATE = LUST for WARPED JUSTICE.  Are you the beast now or am I, for I cannot tell the difference anymore.

It gets weird so be careful if you come looking inside my head.

Thank you, rylla for the compliment. :tt

You guys are so supportive of unknown artists and I appreciate this forum because the images are also viewed as pieces of art as well, not just based on tarot. That's why I feel comfortable putting the Prophets here. :ok

Maybe you and others are unknown artists. But you sure are ARTISTS! I just love seeing these images and art. And you are so talented Ash! Glad you are putting the Prophets up here :ro.

I really like the new card as well. Very interesting take, different, but interesting. And I like the image of the tiger on the back of the prophet :D.

truelighth,

Thank you for your encouragement. :ttThis deck is going to be my exploration of the psyche; beyond the eyes into the soul, this will be a journey without worry about imposed limitations.

****************************************************************

XIII Prophet of Death

The jester weeps for the dearly departed; rivers of ink stains his cheeks as he ferries us home for we look upon his face with terror; his hedious mask strikes fear into our hearts.

Once upon a time, at the threshold of birth; I think I told him that I look forward to the day we'll meet again, old friend.. for we have walked this road many times before. Back then I looked upon his face and called him beautiful, his company gave me comfort for the impending journey into the unknown was more than I could bear.

Yet somehow along the way I must have forgotten my promise to him; I think I forgot my purpose for coming here.

Is death as painful as birth, I wonder? I cannot recall the day I was born into the world, nor the pain I felt nor the cutting of the cord... Could it be that I forgot what death means, like I forgot my reason for coming back?

And when I next look upon the face of Death; would I too, cringe in horror at his face that is made up of my own fear... or would I embrace an old friend who has come to accompany me on the long walk home?

To walk through coal on my own accord or be dragged kicking and screaming; where is dignity in death if there is no dignity in me? My prophets plague me with rambling thoughts of lunacy but I sense some riddled truth in it somewhere.

:rr

IV Prophet of Kings

Really, I have no idea where this is going but what the heck.. its run by a shipload of psychos on a cruise to nowhere...

What I do know is that the tarot structure is crumbling under the scrutiny of the disturbed mind; the world looks upside down from where I stand and its swirling round and round in ribbons of rusty gold.

I invited the Jester to take the throne. Why? Because irritated geniuses are the tricky, twisted funnymen. Witty dream-assasins on a perpetual psychopathic high. He snuck up when noone's looking and snatched the head off the King's heir. Then ran off laughing before the blood turned cold.

In the book of Life, IV is the number of Kings and Emperors; while Death is numbered XIII. Humble is the servant who serves his Lord but the King is not the Lord; and the Jester is never humble before the King.

If he played Death and played it well, then let him play the role of King and we'll see how well the Jester holds the number 4.

Ash

Yikes, the Jester takes the throne? Interesting take. Very powerful card! What is the meaning of the skulls though?

This entire deck; well, The Prophets of the Thorn at least are as Mr. Simon Cowell would say"....pure indulgant nonsense!!"

Its made up of Jesters in each and every card. Inspiration taken from:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jester

If our history is ladden with scores of *foolish kings (*an understatement, imo), then I say let the Jester take the throne. My favorite story...

Indian Kingdom jesters

Tenali Ramakrishna was jester in Vijayanagara Empire. Birbal was a Jester in Emperor Akbar's court. Akbar had a parrot he loved so much he swore he'd kill whoever said he was dead. When it did die, Birbal told him it was in a trance like a yogi. Upon examining it, Akbar angrily said it was dead. Birbal declared Akbar would have to execute himself under his rules.[4]

Better to follow a mad man who knows himself mad.. than follow a sane man who knows not he is insane.

Ah, that is so true. It makes sense. It was just a bit of a surprise. I am still wondering about the skulls though... do they maybe refer to all the dead those 'foolish kings' (and presidents and leaders I presume) have caused? Just a thought I had.

Again, I have to agree with you there... 100%

I love to read the backgrounds on these cards of yours! :ro

Someone once told me; if a person asks a question more than once, that means they want to know the answer. But first I will post a disclaimer; that my answer to your question is subjective.

King, Emperor, Emir, Sultan, all titles. Words that gives a man power he does not have on his own. A man is just a man until people around him hands him that power. Though titles have changed together with political systems, the concept of "head of the state" remains. What the "head of the state" does with the power determines what kind of ruler he was/is.

Thus, your observation about the skulls is a valid one, it shows one aspect of the King and actions that may result from abuse of the power. Even to this day, that kind of abuse is blatantly seen though acceptance of it depends on how well-justified the reasons (BS) are. But kings are mortals too.

I found an article; this quote I found most delightful, putting religious sentiments aside. Said the demon Asmodai to King Soloman:

"My constellation (is like an animal which) reclines in its den in heaven; some men call me the Great Bear, but others the Offspring of a Dragon. Moreover, a smaller constellation accompanies my constellation, for the high position and throne of my father is always in the sky. So do not ask me so many things, Solomon, for eventually your kingdom will be divided. This glory of yours is temporary. You have us to torture for a little while; then we shall disperse among human beings again with the result that we shall be worshiped as gods because men do not know the names of the angels who rule over us." - Testament of Solomon 5:4-5

:ee = :f

We view things in past, present and future perspectives but despite everything, we are limited to what we are capable of achieving while we live and breathe. Because mortality means that one day, Death will come for us... even kings and prophets. Cutting off all the fanciful notions of what death means, that is what it boils down to in the end.

So if we think of boundaries, rules, limitations and structure that's represented by the Emperor card; there is nothing more certain in life than death and vice versa .... the wheel goes round and round unchanged while empires rise and fall, governments merge and break apart, even the shifting of the earth crust changes the face of the planet.

That is why The Jester who plays Death in 13 is also the one who holds the number 4. That's why there are 3 skulls and 1 king.

Thanks Ash, for sharing your ideas and visions behind the card and the skulls. I like the idea of the connection between 13 Death and 4 Emperor, since they are part of the same tarot constellation and thus, yes, they are connected. Very interesting view.. and heh.. I hadn't realized that 1 Jester and 3 Skulls also make up the number 13 :ok.

Btw, while reading your reply,  it occured to me that the skulls also kinda give a different view on the "head of the state" (literally :gi). So I guess this card really has many layers and many ways to be interpreted.

I'm glad you asked. When I finished the Prophet of Death, I knew I had to draw a close up of the prophet because in that XIII, his face is painted and the illusion of him laughing seems magnified but he was not.

In the Prophet of Kings, you can clearly see that he is weeping but if you look at the image (IV) from a distance, the paint on his face still makes it look like he is laughing.. the paint changes the meaning of the card depending on what you see... the face of the man or the paint on his face. Like you said, it can be interpreted on several layers and that it very much depends on what you see/read in the image.

**This image was inspired by truelighth. I saw her work and just had to do one with similiar theme. So thank you dear one for allowing me to nick an idea off you :tt

*****************************************************************

The Prophet of Comformity : V

There is a pair of them; my inner demon and my external facade. There will alway be shadows where the light falls.

The Hierophant would have my absolute obedience. Conformity is part of our existance as social creatures bound by invicible laws of propreity; all the strings tugging us this way and that way. In the place where I am ME, I'll call all clerics liars but not religion a lie. I would not pledge my allegience to a hollow King or Queen if it means blind servitude. I have difficulty breaking free of habits I've acquired from my elders but I know enough to not show my true self to watchful eyes.

:gi So I'll play the game; in a fairytale island made up entirely of glass and gold, where people have grown ugly from all the plastic makeover... I'll don my hedious mask just to fit in with the rest and become a distorted, mindless puppet just to please the masses.

so, I have decided to have a womble between worlds, having realised rather late more than one exists.  Better late than never though eh  :D  And aren't they different?  Nice to experience different energies or vibes - keeps mind, body and spirit fresh.

I will give my thoughts regarding the latest card, and yet again Ash, you have my mind go tumbling with so many words.... it would be too long a posting if I typed everything as it came into my head.

My partner is in such agreement with your sentiments regarding religious figures as opposed to religion itself.  I think I am too, but he really does have strong views by comparison.  the mask.... the expresionless or emotionless 'face' of some of those who try to instill beliefs on us.  They will not be moved by our thoughts questions or inspirations.  The word as they see it, is passed down and should be followed to the letter - what gives us the right to think we can question any of what we are told to believe?  Those who do are soon pulled back into line, and those who fail to toe the line would be discarded. Any compassion or sympathy shown if this happens?  None at all.  After all, they are only doing their duty in line with their beliefs.  That is what they will tell us anyway.  In reality they are humans who have flaws in their personality, hiding behind a mask and using that mask to justify their actions.

As to the marionette, well he has been gagged for sure.  He cannot speak out, and rather sadly, he is now prevented from screaming out. He cannot express his pain, his anguish or anything else. It is now all turned inwards, and in that respect can only do more damage in the long run, unless he finds a way of quieten his mind also.  How sad he has had to do that.  The mask has exerted more control than it realised, and if it were to be made aware of that would be even more satisified.  The strings are sooo controlling yet in subtle way. They can make him move in any direction at the whim of the operator, or they could be just lightly jerked - a reminder that at any time control can be exerted on any part of his being.  It looks as though that control has been enough here to condition him.  Even if the strings were relaxed, he would not take the opportunity to move for himself - time has gone by and he has lost any sense of independance.

That is how I saw it at first, and believe me this is an abridged version of my thoughts.

then I thought... "Ash talks about silver lining, so where is it in this card?"  I think it is there.  The gag may silence him and prevent him from being a verbal free spirit yet the gag cannot stop him from thinking in a free way.  How many surpressed people are there in the world who cannot live their lives overtly (particularly with religious practises) yet their spirit remains strong as they follow their path covertly.  Therefore the mask could just as easily be worn by the marionette, whereby it is still has relevance.  He may be broken physically by the ordeal, but by gagging him there is a chance his spirit and thoughtline can become stronger in order to compensate.  It will break through when the time is right.  The mask he portrays to the outside world and authority will be a cover indeed.  That mask/cover in some parts of the world could be the difference between life and death.

As for the strings, well... his time may come on that score too.  no puppeteer is able to control all the strings all of the time.  When they are released, even momentarily it reminds us we can direct our own movement, even if it is a brief opportunity.  that shortest of time periods will act as a flash to remind us we are still US, and that nobody can ever take total control of us.  Even if he doesn't need to move when that opportunity arises, he should.  It will give him hope.  It will be a reminder of who he really is.  For now, it may be his only act of rebellion.

Nice one Ash.  Not sure I have done it justice here with my ramblings, but my excuse is it is early  here in NZ  :D   Was thinking about / chatting about this last night with my fiancee.  Alas too late to get the PC fired up to write the reply.  I do not see your depiction as the spiritual teacher I usually associate with the Hierophant, but it is a nice reminder that we need to acknowledge issues worldwide at times when looking at this card.  It isn't all nice and cosy with everyone having free will.

take care

Davina

I endorse this totally  :D  The artwork is breathtaking.  If you were to want this deck or the Diary deck for this reason alone, it is a valid one.   My dad is an artist who specialises in pencil work.  He would be the first to put his hands up and say Ash is more than just talented.  There is raw power encapsulated in a lot of the images.  Achieving that with a pencil and no colour is quite a feat. I take my hat off to that big time.

The cards are also incredible.  My favourite black/white deck to date has been the Book of Kaos.  I think Ash' images have more depth for sure.  I will confess they may not be a first choice reading deck for others, but I am more than open to using them for myself and really looking within - warts and all as the saying goes.

So, does the queue start here then?   :D

You're welcome :tt. Although I have to say, I am a bit jealeous :qqseeing your interpretation.. your art is just so much more powerful. But I like it!

I didn't comment on it before, even though I saw it a week ago. But I tell you, I know the marionette idea was mine, but you have taken it to another level. This card gives me the chills! I think it has everything to do with how incredibly hopeless and entangled the marionette looks on this card. And then the gag in front of his mouth... I just recognize that too well in my life! Feeling like you can't speak, can't move unless others tell you you can! :ccSo you have captured the Prophet of Conformity very, very well!

Btw, I love the mask... it makes the puppet master more visible and yet at the same time anonymous.:ro

rylla... nicole... victoria.star...

:gi It is always a relief for me to know that The Prophet series don't scare everyone off. I do worry about that moments before I click on "Send" ... then I bite my nails and hope the witch hunters don't come for me.. :bl

Davina...

Have I told you how much I enjoy reading your thoughts on my cards? Type away for England, by all means. You have shared many, many refreshing insights that have helped me look at my own work in a whole different way sometimes :hp

truelighth...

There is no need to be jealous, dear friend. I love the stark simplicity in your 8 of Swords card for the TCF 2009 deck and quite frankly, I would not be able to achieve that wonderful effect of "less is more" being OCD...

Your work rocks... and I wonder when you'll start on your own deck... :ce
