So I'm pretty heartbroken over a recent "purchase" I made on eBay. I've been wanting a Pam A/B/C/D deck and have been watching eBay for a deck to come up. Last night I checked up on eBay and found what looked to be a Pam B deck up for only $200 Buy It Now Price (link: https://ebay.to/2M5mYSf) so I bought it immediately, absolutely thrilled at the find...fast forward a few hours and the seller without warning cancels my order. When I contacted the seller asking why they unexpectedly cancelled my order without consulting me (s)he claimed, "there was a problem with the condition of the item and so we immediately refunded you."

My suspicion is that the seller after seeing the deck snatched so quickly wanted to relist the deck at a higher price. I've had this happen a couple times before and all eBay tells me is that its a breach of eBay policy for a seller to cancel an item without first talking to the buyer and they'll make note in the seller's record. If I see that they relist the item again, I can report it and they'll investigate and if they find that is the case they will take the listing down and if this seller does this enough times, their account can be restricted. But for all I know, the investigation would take much too long to do any good and all in all this just seems like a slap on the wrist for the seller. Anyways I wrote back to the seller saying that it was against eBay policy to cancel without buyer's consent and the honorable thing to do is to send pictures of the new-found damage and allow me the opportunity to decide whether I still want the deck of not and if I do not hear back from them, I will try and escalate this with eBay but I don't believe that anything will come of it.

Why can't sellers conduct business with some integrity?! Yes, it sucks that you've undervalued your item but that doesn't give you the right to reneg on your deal. Learn your lesson and do some proper research next time. The more I think about it the more I get worked up over it. :cc

Anyways...don't know if there was really a point to all my rambling but just wanted to share my experience and was wondering if any of you guys have had such experiences on eBay (or elsewhere) and was there anything that can be done?

OMG! I am so sorry this happened to you! I heared about this sale from another tarot friend, who was gutted that she missed out, because she hesitated. I had no idea you were the buyer.

The seller certainly undersold it. But to just cancel it, is not right. It is their fault for not doing the research properly!

Lol. The tarot collecting community is definitely a small one. I hesitated as well because there wasn't enough pictures of the cards so couldn't be sure that it was even a complete deck much less a Pam B but it was $200 which as long as its a complete deck whether it's a Pam A, B, C,or D it should be a good deal.

@truelighth have you ever had sellers cancel an order on you without notice?

Anyways still haven't heard back from the seller but I'm really not holding my breath. I know I'm really biased since this happened to me, but I really think there should be a no tolerance policy for this type of behavior on eBay. As I said, this isn't the first time this has happened to me with a deck but its the first one that's really gutted me.

No, I haven't had that happen to me. I feel sorry that this has happened to you so many times.h

I think it is good you shared this with us. It warns us about the seller.

I heared immediately about the sale from this friend that mailed me that she missed it. And I was like WOW! I haven't seen a Pam deck sell for so little in ages! And was so amazed I shared the news with some friends. Only in the early years of this century a Pam would sell for such a price, because not many people knew about them back then.

I found this deck also interesting due to the tax revenue stamps on the box. They are like the ones on my box.

Again, I am so sorry this has happened to you. They should at least contact you and answer. I would definately take this up with ebay.

And yes, the tarot community is a small one. Everytime I get to know someone new, it turns out they know someone else I know. This particular friend I got in touch with a few months ago about blue box RWS decks.

Heh...if anything I just drew attention on that seller's store and all these collectors will just be watching intently for the deck to be relisted once again so they can snatch it up. Its been almost 24 hours since I contacted the seller and haven't heard a peep...wonder how long they'll wait until they relist the item. :f

Yes because I bought it...only for the seller to cancel my order hours later without contacting me first or citing a reason for the cancellation. The listing would still show as sold even if the order was cancelled in the end.

That's not what happened when I just cancelled one recently - it ended up "this item is no longer available for sale".

I feel for you, I have had this happen to me a couple of times. First time the item was taken by mistake to a flea market and the seller had to cancel the buy it now (good communication and believable). Second time the auction went the distance with only two bidders and the seller refunded my payment, message through ebay said item no longer available (sour grapes possibly, expected higher sale?). This can actually be a two way street as I "bought it now" only to realize after that the description did not match a picture and was in effect not wanted any more. I was able to cancel the sale without any problems. One reason that purchases are cancelled may be due to the fact that some people use multiple selling locations or have a retail store and don't remove items from shelf after listing. I recently purchased an item that was listed as a buy now on ebay and etsy, it took a little while for the seller to end the ebay listing, I was hoping no one would buy while it was still up! I got no where dealing with ebay and was very upset that a sale wasn`t honoured so I know where you are coming from. Hope this sale still can work out for you!

I'm sorry this has happened - it must be sickening. If it's any consolation, it seems it's no longer possible to 'Save This Seller', (I tried a few times on different items), so there may be some investigation going on at Ebay. Don't worry though - I'm not a prospective buyer or bidder, just wondering how this will pan out.

Oh well. I deleted all the stuff about the evil buyer who screwed me over.... Mind you - she was a non-payer - maybe that gets a different message !

@Greg Connelly it doesn't look like the sale will go through. I contacted the seller after he claimed the cancelled sale was due to "problems with the condition" demanding that the very least he can do is send pictures of the so-called issues with the condition and let me, the buyer decide whether I was still willing to buy it...its been nearly 3 days and he still has not responded. So I'm guessing he already sold it outside of eBay. Its even possible that someone on eBay just messaged him with a higher price offer.
Also, if the seller had cross-posted this deck on other sites and was too late in taking it off eBay when it sold elsewhere, I don't see why he would then go and lie saying it was due to damages.

@goldenweb I'm guessing maybe depending on user location different information is seen? Because I still am able to 'Save This Seller' Anyways the seller has not responded to my message asking to see what damages so not looking good.

@gregory Yes, maybe because the reason was different, the message shown is different. My seller did not choose a specific reason when he submitted the cancellation order.

"Its even possible that someone on eBay just messaged him with a higher price offer."

That seems pretty likely. Hmmmm...

What would people expect to pay for Pam B deck in reasonable condition?

@AdamMcLean I have no idea. There was another Pam B (misidentified as a Pam A) that sold for ~$650USD (~500GBP) but it looks to have also been a "Buy It Now" price. Other than that I haven't seen one pop up on eBay recently (I've only started tarot/tarot collecting within the last year). Also just to clarify...I'm not sure if that listing was a Pam B or C since not enough cards were shown. That was also part of the fun robbed from me: the surprise of seeing which deck I ended up winning.
:n

I've seen a few Pam As (2 complete decks, 1 incomplete) sold on auction recently between ~$1800-$1900USD
