IN 2015 I made the Pippa Tarot. With the majors and pip cards instead of illustrated minors. Also, with some extra cards.

Well, a few months ago, I actually finished making the illustrated minors. As well as correcting the majors and the court cards. Which means removing the shadows that were in the original deck, and so giving the deck a cleaner look.

I have also made a Happy Squirrel Card and a second Lovers card. The other extra cards included in the old deck are not in this version.

I have named it the Pippa and the Pips Tarot, to make a distinction between the earlier version.

So presenting my deck to you. It is printed in a limited edition of 60 signed copies. Check out the trading section if you are interested. And otherwise, just enjoy the images.

Courts and the extra cards

Btw, the Happy Squirrel is based on the Killer Bunny of Monty Python and the Holy Grail

It's very sweet and rather lovely, truelighth. Did you set up all those little tableaux in (mostly) reality and make all the clothes? (Obviously not the sky and water.)

Don't reveal your secrets if you'd rather not, it's just me liking (as usual) to know how things are done...

Yes, I did set up the little diorama's (tableaux) and then take pictures. Often about 40 or 50, sometimes with variations. And then pick out the best of them.

I used a lot of dollhouse stuff, as it is almost the same size. Not exactly, as the dolls are 6.5" and doll house stuff is 1:12. Some things I also made myself (like the medal on the 6 of wands, the Torah, the paint brush on the 8 of pentacles) and several others. I made most of the clothes myself. Some are actually made by others or are original doll clothes that were once sold (The dress from the Empress was made by someone else, the dresses on the Sun are original clothes).

Oh, and the backgrounds and the water. I made those too! I have a number of backgrounds. For some, with the blue sky (and for the Sun, 3 of Wands, 10 of cups and 10 of Swords) are pastel drawings I did especially for that purpose.
The water, and the grass too, are for trains. I glued them to the surface. Funny thing about the water, because of the flash, you actually see reflexions in the water. I didn't expect that, but it was a nice surprise and works so well!

I don't mind sharing my secrets. I have been working on it for months. Everytime finding a solution for how to make the card work. Like on the Tower, that one took some thinking of how to pull it off.

I actually used photoshop very little. Only to cut and crop and remove shadows that were created by the flash and that didn't fit.

The few cards I did photoshop are: Death (background), 4 and 9 of swords (swords on the wall), 3, 4, 5 , 6 and 10 of pentacles (the pentacles) and the Happy Squirrel (skelet bones under the tree) and the 7 of cups (different cups). All other items were actually in the diorama's.

Some things I found particulary funny to do. Like some of the glasses look to have wine in them. That is actually lemonade sirope in little doll house glasses :gi. The wands are branches I collected, the snow on the 5 of pentacles is cotton wool. Oh, and here and there I put in some little jokes. Like the little cats in the pictures. But als, next to the spinning wheel in the Wheel of Fortune, I put some balls of yarn. Just a little joke.

Anywa, I don't mind telling you my secrets. As you can tell. It is actually fun to share a bit about the creation process. I would be so happy whenever I had an idea and it worked out. It really made me jump with joy.

Oh, and the eclipse on the 8 of cups. Yes, I did photoshop that in. On the 2 of swords and rhe Moon there is also a Moon, but that was actually in the diorama (printed it out and glued it on the background).

What I did find a pity was that I had to take all the diorama's down again.

That is so lovely - thanks for letting us in on the creation process. I'm going to have another look at the cards you write about in your post (and the photobucket ones) in the light of your revelations. The water is amazing - I'd never have guessed you made that too. All your love and care (it really shows) make this a very special tarot.

Thank you. I absolutely loved working on it. The water was such a wonderful surprise. I never expected it to reflect the dolls. It is because it is water for trains, it consists of blue cardboard and a plastic overlay with structure. And the overlay causes the reflection and gives it depth. i had a similar effect on the Hierophant. The window actually reflects on the floor, thanks to the flash. Sometimes you can really get effects you never expect.

I used all kinds of things, sand, little stones, bigger rocks, cardboard, clay (for the tower), and even wallpaper. Funny thing, I mostly used the wallpaper for the floors. Even some of the wooden floors. You get very creative. Or at least I did.

Thank you for saying it is really special. I still have some copies for sale (posted in the trade section), although quite a lot of the collectors on here already got it. I am also very pleased with the printer. It is a Dutch printer who did a kind of print-on-demand. But they really delived quality. I tried Gamecrafter before that and it looked crap.

Oh, btw, if you look at the dolls. Some have different faces. That is because these are my own dolls and some have been customized (different hair, different faces). Oh, and I didn't create the Princess Leia and the Indian princess doll. Those were customized by someone else and I bought them.

Trying to resist as I have far too many decks already...

You say you used a Dutch printer - are the cards sent from there or did you have the 60 decks sent to you? I'm thinking about customs duty from the US (although you could be anywhere...).

I had all the decks send to me. So they are in my house. They are not a real print-on-demand printer that they print only a copy when you ask. But in the sense that they also print small amounts. They are all numbered and signed already.

And I used a Dutch printer, because I live in the Netherlands. So no customs from the US to worry about.

But I fully understand if you have too many decks already. I got way to many, but well, I guess I am a collector at heart.

Thanks for the info. truelighth. I was never a collector for collecting's sake - I always said I'd stop at 100, but fell in love with too many decks and exceeded that number by quite a bit. I've had a break from buying but still get tempted...
