Does anyone know the reason why some decks of Camphausen and Van Leeuwen's Kabbalistisches Tarot come in white boxes and others in blue boxes?
I've just picked up a cheap copy of the white box deck and notice that the extra Tree of Life/Baum des Lebens card has the Hebrew words 'Atz ha Chaim' all printed the wrong way round at the top of the card. Here's a copy from Eno's site: http://eno-tarot.blogspot.nl/2013/04/tree-of-life-tarot-kabbalistisches-tarot.html
Is this the same for the blue box? Or for the 1981 limited edition?
All best wishes,
Peter

I have a 1983 Muller one and no 34 of the the original silk screened one (222 copies) from 1981 which was indeed limited and comes in a sort of slide out blue and gold box. The colours are much duller and the card stock is almost grey.

I'll get them out if you tell me EXACTLY what more you want to know !

Thanks for the reply, Gregory. The first question about the colour of the boxes was to try and figure out whether the blue or the white boxed deck came first or whether both were issued at the same time. This was for the general edition, not the limited edition.
The second question concerned the Hebrew words at the top of the extra card, the one bearing the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. In my deck the Hebrew words are going in the wrong direction (i.e., left to right, instead of right to left) and the Hebrew letters themselves are printed the the wrong way round. I'll try and attach a image of the Hebrew to show what I mean. If it doesn't work, the link I provided in the previous message, to Eno's blog, shows the card that I mean.
I'm just attaching an image showing how the Hebrew should look.

Okay, that didn't work because it deleted the first image. So .... now the first image is how the Hebrew should look and I'll try and attach a second image, from the original card.

My questions for you, Gregory:
1. What colour is your 1983 box? Blue or White. Do you know anything about which colour box came first?
2. Is the Hebrew printed correctly or wrongly in a. your limited edition deck and b. your 1983 deck?

Thanks :)

OK - thing one. My "general" edition has a blue box. I bought it in 1987. I've not actually seen a white boxed one. But given where I bought it (Somerville) I suspect he had stock from when it first showed up. It says on the box "Copyright and printed 1983" - which suggests I'm right, there.

The Hebrew on the blue box Muller deck is correct. But the LE deck does not have a tree of life card at all. I thought it didn't, but decided to wait and see if you needed info about the LE before EXERTING myself ! And the figure on the back of the LE is gold. So is the colouring of the Hebrew letters on the majors.

As a cheerful aside, the word Priestess on the LE deck is printed as "priestress".

As to why some are in a white and some in a blue - assuming there's no Bad People involved - these things do change. I am aware of MANY decks where the box has changed colour over the years.

The only white boxed copies I can see seem to be on German ebay and amazon, actually... and they seem to be (from the crappy picture) from a different publisher entirely - Sphinx Verlag, in Basel, Switzerland. Interesting. As Kaplan lists USG as the mass market publisher, I assume they came first - so - blue box.

Gregory, thanks for all this information. The white box also has AGM on the lid:
Druck und Copyright
AGM
AGMULLER
CH 8212 Neuhausen am Rheinfall.
There's no date on the box and, unfortunately, I don't have the LWB. [I've just clicked on your link and see that the date is given: 1985, so that answers the question nicely].

Sphinx Verlag is now part of Random House, but perhaps it used to be a subdivision of Muller? I see that the first publication by Sphinx was Sergius Golowin's Die Welt des Tarot, so they've clearly got some tarot credentials: http://www.randomhouse.de/sphinx/verlag.jsp?pub=57000

Anyway, thanks for the information. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for an affordable set of the 222 LE.

Thanks for the information about the unfortunate 'priestress'. Do you have a copy of the Tarocco di Sissi? Mine has the King of Cups amusingly described as the Queen of Cups (Schale K├Ânigin) in German. Transgender, intentional or otherwise, hardly comes as much of a surprise, though, in a Folichi deck.

Yes, I have the Sissi, and they are all like that as far as I know. I also have a Japanese deck with a Queeb of Wands, among other delights; the number of hierophants spelt wrong (heirophant) is legion, and there are a good few Strenghts around too !

Then there was the WONDERFUL Lo Scarabeo BOX for the Sweet Twiligth. I have a spare of those, if you'd like it... (box only.) Several of us had WARNED one of their staff that it was wrong in the catalogue image, pre-printing, and he told them; then there was a great post from him one day. "And the box says twiligth. One minute till I tell my boss..." !!
