Hello everyone.  My partner hand painted a tarot deck and we're getting it printed this week.  I was hoping you guys would have some feedback for us!  The deck will be released quite soon although we don't have an official date quite yet.  The deck is a full 78 cards and will be printed at a local printer in Colorado on 130 lb card stock.  If you're itching to see more of the cards we have a couple of them up on our Facebook page- Raven's Fool LLC.  Please feel free to leave questions, feedback, comments or tips.  We would really appreciate it!

Oh and we will be giving a away a signed, numbered special first edition deck!

Bags beat dodgy boxes hands down.
That includes the boxes - and the occasional useless bags - provided by some big publishers (Llewellyn, I am looking at you :ww)

I vote bag unless you can find a sturdy box that REALLY fits (sometimes I consider making a deck to fit a dollar store wooden box, myself :cl)

ETA some of us here will not TOUCH facebook; if you have a public page there, please add a link, as it's the only way people like me will ever see it.

MANY decks come in bags. If you store them sensibly, they are fine. f you mean bent in the mail - a standard mailing box deals with that.

Ok, just to voice the opinion of a box person, that's me :cl

I always like my decks to come in boxes and if they don't, I will try and create one for them or a slipcase of cardboard. I don't have anything with bags. But if this is a cheaper edition, I can understand you would go for bags. Personally, I would probably just want the deck without even a bag for a cheaper edition.

Oops, here we go sorry!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ravens-Fool-LLC/204512652918039

let me know if you can see everything alright, this should let you see it.
I will be continuing to post pictures on there, I promise!

We will defiantly be shipping in boxes but packaging the cards in bags.  My girlfriend is not fond of the idea and I was wondering if people have an aversion to bags or if you guys don't mind them.  I'm just not sure we'll be able to find boxes that fits the cards for any sort of reasonable price.

I find bags useless as a storage method. Indeed, unless the bag has the title clearly printed on it, I immediately chuck it and find a box in which to put the cards. If possible, I use transparent plastic boxes, as I can immediately see what is in it. A pile of bags in a storage drawer would be infuriating, as I would have to open up a number of these to find the particular tarot I was looking for at the time.

My view, as a collector, is drop the bags and make a nice box!

Some custom made bags are, of course, part of the production, and I would keep these. But anonymous, untitled bags seem pointless to me.

Hi Corvus,

That is ok. As I said, I am a box person and I just wanted to voice my opinion. But if this deck comes in a bag, I will just find it a box myself. I do that all the time. No biggie.

And  especially if you can keep the cost down by not having a box (let alone finding a fitting one), it will make the deck more affordable for more people.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!  Keep it coming!  So here's what we're planing to do: we want to do a regular edition and a special edition for this first printing.  The regular edition we want to package in bags for cost.  For the special edition we're going to do a hand painted wooden box with a few additional goodies in it.

For the regular edition I may be able to figure out a way to keep the cards a bit more secure, keep them from rubbing the bag....  I'll try to figure something out.

For the special edition boxes I think we'll be able to keep them secured without too much trouble.

Adam- The bags that we have picked out are not handmade unfortunately (no sowing ability) however they are unique enough that I think you'll know which cards are in there :)

I put name tags on mine. I don't UNBOX anything. But if a deck comes with no box, I'd rather have a bag than a box that doesn't fit properly - and finding ones that do would leave me looking for boxes all the time - decks are such varied sizes.

People with big collections have different storage considerations than other people. To put it mildly.

To keep the deck together, just wrap it in a strip of paper, fastened with a bit of cellophane tape.  Don't use a rubber band.  A paper strip is easier and more secure than a ribbon and will keep the cards from slipping around inside the bag for shipping purposes.   If you're ambitious, you can wrap it like a present in a piece of paper--typing paper works fine.  Our first collaborative deck came in a paper wrapper from OnePotato and it's great.  The famous David's tarot has a nice paper wrapper, too.

I like a nice box but it's never a deal-breaker. I'm surely not the only one who routinely saves deck-size cardboard boxes that come my way :)

We've got a thread here somewhere on clever packaging.

If you feel the need for something rubber-bandy, a hair scrunchy - not the sort that might as WELL be a rubber band ! - works quite well...

Thanks Debra! I thought we were pretty limited in our choice of packaging but I never even considered most of the stuff I saw there.

Oh and then we want to do something that I think is pretty cool.  We will not be including a book with the deck... However, we will be discussing a card a week online, talking about the inspiration behind the card, the meaning of the card, any quirks with it, etc.  Also everyone else can join in and leave comments on their thoughts, experiences and interpretations of the cards.  We are hoping that we can get some great discussion on the deck and perhaps tarot in general and this way everyone can add their thoughts for everyone to see for our "official" card explanation.  I think it would be really cool for the deck to be interactive and hopefully get all sorts of different interpretations that anyone can join in on.  What do you all think?  I think it's very exciting but perhaps that's just me ;)

Hey guys, we are having some trouble finding plain wooden boxes that are big enough for the deck, at least 3.5 by 4.5 in (hopefully a bit bigger) and unfinished. We need 22 boxes total. Does anyone have any ideas where we could look? Finding the boxes has been very difficult for some reason. Any suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks!

In Canada I would strongly recommend Dollarama. Failing that - Michael's ?

I just saw this thread; sooo looking forward to this deck - box or bag is not a deal maker or deal breaker for me either - I'm just happy to hear that is going to be published; guessing by the size of the box you are looking for, 3.5' by 4.5', the cards will be big enough to be able to enjoy the artwork.

Since I live in Canada, Gregory's advise would work here - I wouldn't mind looking for boxes in Dollarama and send them to you - but I don't think this solution would work because of the shipping cost.

Alright, so we found boxes!  We were able to order some from Hobby Lobby.  We got the proofs back from the printer!  They needed a little work but we got them fixed up.  The bags came in and they are very cute!. The big change is we are going to have the cards printed at 4x3.5 in instead of 4.5x3.5 in.  We're getting there!  As soon as we get the next proof back I should be able to get the contest information together and make the announcement for that!  Exciting stuff!

Update! We have our packaging and now we are waiting on the printer, hopefully this will be the last proof.  I want to make sure we have the final proof before we start the contest.  The contest will will be open for everyone and it will be open for 2 weeks.  You will need to answer one question on our website (ravensfool.com), give us your name, and your email address.  We only want one entry per person please!  We will then enter everyone who gave the correct answer into a hat and draw a name.  The name drawn will win a special edition deck!  Pictures of the special edition will be up soon!

I received mine a few weeks ago. I ordered the normal version, not the special one with the box. But it got here quick.

Hey everyone, check your emails.  Everyone who emailed us should have a response.   I apologize for the delay in our response time but we have both been quite sick for the past several days.  Everything should be caught up now however!  Thank you for your patience!

My mail sitter reports that it FINALLY arrived. I do resent what the PO charges to collect customs duty - THREE TIMES the actual duty. But it is THERE ! YAY !
