Hi, I'm putting this out here as a trial balloon.  I originally started this as deck for myself, then wondered if some of you might be interested in it as a limited edition self-published deck.

I have selected picture postcards from pre-1910 (nearly all 1900-1909) to create a Tarot Deck of 78. These are images from photo postcards from all over the world, showing the culture, context and expectations of humanity just over 100 years ago.

The cost of the deck would be only to cover my costs for printing and shipping, much like our collaborative decks here at TCM.  The deck has 78 cards, plus a cover card (attached as an example) and a Happy Squirrel.  This deck has not yet been printed so it would take a little time for me to arrange for printing and distribution.  I'm still working on a back design but have something in mind.

Let me know if you would be interested in this.  Best wishes!

I'd be interested, too.  What a wonderful idea!

Here's the back design I was thinking of.  I like to use reversals when I read and one of my pet peeves with decks is a back that is asymmetrical.  I don't want to know the card before I know the card, if you get my drift.  So I wanted the back to be at least a stab at symmetry even though I can see differences.

Hopefully I can find a printer that won't round the corners because postcards don't usually have rounded corners.  Obviously, I need to keep costs reasonable, too.  I hope that doesn't mean I have to give up on my ideas about this.

Thanks for your interest.

Marcia

Really like how the design has been made to be reversible.

And just noticed that it was made by one of my favorite tarot bloggers.  Are you a friend of hers? :cl

Thanks for the tip on the printer, skad1.  It looks like they can do the deck with squared corners like I'm hoping.  I know this will take longer than I'd like but it's exciting to think of this getting off the ground this way.

Thanks for your interest, everyone.  I'll keep you posted here.  I will post when there's a deadline for orders as we get closer for those of you interested in getting a copy.  They will be numbered and signed.  I don't intend to mass-market them.  This is just a labor of love.

Hi Marcia959 - The box cover and the card back are absolutely beguiling. The cover is romantic and exotic, and the gilt postcard logo and postal stamp on the back is a genuine ticket to magic. If the inside of your deck is as adventurous and inviting as the outside and the other side, then it is a keeper indeed ! The theme and the style both hit the 'sweet spot'. This promises to be a deck that can fill the sails of every sojourner crossing the path of the Tarot.

In short, I concur with the rest of the forum. To my misfortune, you cannot count me in given the foreseeable future. However, if you are still in stock when my ship comes in, then somehow I will find a way to clamber or leap or swing on board, and very gladly join with you all, me hearties.

Update for those interested in pricing.  It looks like the price will be $20 plus postage.  I accept PayPal.

I would like to gather the "official list" of folks who are in pretty soon, but there is definitely still time to sign up.  I want to make sure the "I'm interested" people feel comfortable enough to commit and I know that people would like a couple more images to make up their minds.

Again, I anticipate that this will be a limited number run, signed and numbered.  I expect that I will limit this to 50 decks from the level of interest and the pricing.  I do NOT plan to release this as free downloadables later.  This is a once-and-done thing.

If you have a particular number x/50 that you prefer, please let me know that via PM also.  Number one is already taken by me!

Thanks so much for your interest!

Marcia

OK for those who need more samples.  Here's another.  The big ugly message across the middle will not be part of the final.

Marcia, it's a lovely image, but a shame that her feet are covered by the title. Could you not incorporate the titles within the cards as you've done for the title card at the top of the thread (using the same font)? It works really well. It seems a pity to lose any part of those old pictures.

Unfortunately, not all my images are as "title friendly" as my cover card, so that's why I went with the white "message band" at the bottom.  :f

Marcia, vertical type can work well for those images that are not so title-friendly. I find it's usually possible to find a good position for it - it can look good even if it's carefully placed over parts of an image.

OK I KNOW you guys like the whole bleed to the edge thing on all sides but I really love the "white bar" thing that was part of old postcards.  That said, I fiddled around with the fool a bit and got her cute shoes in.  So, how's this?

Here's a sample from the minors, too, the 9 of Wands.  Smoke 'em if you've got 'em again.

To those who contacted me with intent to purchase:  The deck images and LWB have been sent to the printer and you should have an email with PayPal instructions.

There are just a few copies left.  Thought I would add one more image for your entertainment.  This is one of my favorites.  The LWB book entry for this is:

9 of Swords:  Haven’t we all had this happen to us at least once?  You think it’s all just a bad dream and then you realize you really are in bed with a bunch of dead fish.

Thanks so much for your interest in Postcard!  Unfortunately all decks are sold now.  However, I do have a couple more decks waiting in the wings with different images.

I want to get Postcard out first, see how the recipients like them, then gauge whether to work to get the other 2 decks printed.  The two new ones are not photo postcards, but different images.  No more detail right now, but will post in this forum when ready.

Thanks again.

Marcia
