Sarah Magdalene

Hello!

http://sarahmagdalene.wordpress.com/

Probably most of you have already seen my post at Aeclectic, but I thought it was time I left a link here as well.

I am so immersed in this project! All I want to do is paint and research but I am starting to realize that I have to consider how I am going to get it out there. Honestly its such a vast amount of work involved that I'm not sure I can cope with producing and marketing it as well, but maybe I will have to do just that in order to have total control over the project.

I looked at US Games specs for accepting Tarot and they seemed so restrictive and limiting, that I'm not sure I'll even bother to contact them. Maybe what I need is a smaller more adventurous publishing outfit to take a risk with me. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

And feedback of course, I'm into that! :)

Sarah

Hi Sarah, they're wonderful - I love the somehow modern yet timeless feel (if that's not a contradiction), the colour combinations, the Thoth mood, yet with your own originality. And the way you've managed to keep control of the designs, without tending to splash paint all about before having to try to rein it in, as I always do. Also the painted titles and the card meanings - great - looking forward to seeing more. :ok

What about Schiffer or LLewellyn? From memory of their guidelines I think US Games takes about 2 years from submission to publication, Llewellyn less and Schiffer less still, although it was a while ago that I looked so could be quite wrong as I've never actually submitted work to any of them.

Wonderful cards. I really love that Sun card, the face on the sun is penetrating. The Queen of Swords... Yikes! Definitely want to stay on her good side! :D

There's also 7th House, who put out the Pearls of Wisdom deck (the colors reminded me of that one a little). If it was a Majors-only, I'd say talk to Adam :) but it looks like it's going to be a full 78-card deck.

Thanks to you both for your enthusiasm and suggestions! :)
I will investigate all those options.

I am beginning to think I should do it all myself because I'd really love to have an oracle like site, where people could come for automatic readings as well as buy cards and other related products. I wonder if people do this much? I'd like to find some software that I could set that up with, if anyone knows of any. I have been trying not to look at other peoples decks and sites too much, because I don't want to be too influenced, so I am quite ignorant about how it all works out there. But I think now I will have to stop being such a Hermit.

I started with the Majors, and completed a first set, but then I found the Court Cards to be surprisingly fascinating and empowering to work on. Going back to the Majors after the Courts I felt so much more in control of the situation that I decided to do them again. Still at a loss about the pips, though I can visualize some wild Aces.

I can't help with tips about the Web site, sorry. I don't know anything about those software programs.

I will, however, be eager to see more of your deck as it progresses. Be sure to keep us posted. :)

Sarah, the one that springs to mind is the Orphalese programme. I'm not sure how much it does but there's plenty of info on Google about it, and I believe it was created by an Aeclectic Tarot member.

This site:

http://www.marticia.com/tarot/orphalese.html

mentions internet connection, so perhaps it works for online readings too.

Thanks Pen! :)
I had a look at your site and your decks are very beautiful!
I am flattered that you like my art.

It seems with most of these publishers they don't like it when you paint your own text. But I like doing that! :D
Somehow the ritual of it feeds the design. I often find the shapes of the Hebrew Letters and Astrological symbols suggest the forms above them.

Hello All!

I've opened a new dedicated Tarot blog here:
http://sarahmagdalene.wordpress.com/

It's much easier for people to comment on than VOX and prettier too.

Also posted the completed Lust card:

That's one very scary devil... it made me glad you'd posted your photo.

Loved reading the research and thought that went into the painting - I'm sure you'll find a major publisher for this.

Captivating! - well, it might not be the right world to use it for Devil (or is it?). Impressive, powerful, expressive, scary, - makes you stare at it -and brings to surface inner emotions.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes it scared me!

I hope I do find a publisher. Haven't approached anyone, but I suppose I should soon. Hope I can find one who doesn't feel the need to mess with my artistic vision too much. Might have to set my DEVIL on them if they try that. ;D

I love doing the research! I am so obsessed with the whole process it is scary.

Yes I think captivating fits perfectly....the frame of the mirror is a chain after all.
I know what you mean about bringing stuff to the surface. It certainly seemed to do that to my life. Then again all the cards have had extremely strange effects both in the outer and inner worlds. I'd sound like a megalomaniac if I described them all.

It's beautiful Sarah. And as always, I love reading the accompanying text - so true.

Shades of of Do What Thou Wilt  in DH Lawrence's:
It doesn’t matter when we die, so long as we live fulfilling the deepest desire that is in us. And a life which is a denial of the deepest desire is much worse than any death, it is a sheer lie.”
An it harm none...

Maybe if you wait, one will come to you, as happened with the Mary El. If my little Fig Tree were a large/medium publisher with the resources to do it Justice, I'd be knocking persistently on your virtual door...

This is what I am hoping. Seeing as I still have quite a few Majors to go I might as well just play a waiting game for now. Maybe a publisher who actively seeks me out will be less likely to mess with it.

She's amazing, Sarah. I love the way she's not fixed to any particular historical era - a Priestess for all time.

You've made me want to read the Sea Priestess again too, although I think I've passed it on...
